A Gran Canaria mountain viewpoint

The Wild Canary

Participation
Waiver

Draft wording. This waiver is a working draft while our final version is being prepared. It sets out the things we will ask you to confirm before your retreat. The final wording will replace this page, and anyone who has already booked will be asked to confirm the final version.

What this covers

Our retreats involve activity in the outdoors. Depending on the retreat you have chosen that can include road cycling, hiking on mountain terrain, swimming and surfing in the Atlantic, and movement sessions such as pilates. These are the things that make the week worth doing, and they carry a level of risk that we cannot remove entirely.

This waiver is how you tell us you understand that, and that you are joining in willingly. It sits alongside our terms and conditions, which cover booking, payment and cancellation.

Acknowledgement of risk

By accepting this waiver you confirm that you understand:

  • Activities take place on public roads, mountain trails, and in open water, where conditions can change quickly.
  • Terrain, weather, traffic and sea state are outside our control.
  • There is a risk of injury, and in rare cases serious injury, in any physical outdoor activity.
  • Medical help may take longer to reach you in remote parts of the island than it would at home.

Your health and fitness

You confirm that you are in good enough general health to take part in the activities on your retreat, and that you have told us about anything relevant. That includes injuries, medical conditions, medication and allergies. We collect this through your guest profile form before you travel, and it stays confidential to the team looking after you.

If anything changes between booking and arriving, please tell us. It is far easier for us to adjust a route or a session in advance than on the day.

Following the team

Our guides make decisions on the ground about routes, pace, sea conditions and turning back. You agree to follow their reasonable instructions, to wear the safety equipment provided or required, such as a helmet when cycling, and to tell them promptly if you are struggling or unwell.

You also agree not to take part while under the influence of alcohol or anything else that would affect your judgement or balance.

Insurance

You need your own travel insurance that covers the activities on your retreat, including medical treatment and repatriation. Some policies exclude cycling, hiking above certain altitudes, or watersports, so it is worth checking the wording rather than assuming. We will ask you to confirm your cover before you travel.

Medical treatment

If you are injured or unwell and cannot make the decision yourself, you agree that we may arrange emergency medical treatment for you. Any costs of that treatment are yours, which is why the insurance above matters.

Photography

We often take photographs and video during retreats and may use them to show what our retreats are like. If you would rather not appear, just tell us. We will not use your image, and it will not affect your week in any way.

Accepting this waiver

You accept this waiver by ticking the box when you reserve your place. We record the date and the version of the waiver you accepted, so both of us have a clear record of what was agreed.

Questions about any of this are welcome before you book. Email info@thewildcanary.com and we will talk it through.
